East Alabama Male College, sponsored by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was chartered in May 1856. Classes opened in 1859 in Auburn, Alabama, but the college closed during the Civil War. Reopening in 1866, the college became a land-grant institution in 1872 and changed its name to Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. Hutsell, Wilbur Hall, 1892-1980.

Hutsell was born in Missouri, and graduated from the University of Missouri. After service in World War I, he served from 1921-1963 in the Athletic Department at Auburn University. Among the positions he held were those of Track Coach, Professor of Physical Education, Basketball Coach, Football Trainer, and Athletic Director. He also was Trainer and Coach at the 1924, 1928, and 1932 Olympic Games. He received numerous national awards and honors. From the description of Papers, 1880-1...
